Do a simple search on Google Maps for a birrieria in Los Angeles and the markers will sprinkle down over all corners of the page as if you were in Guadalajara. Folks with good memories of food during visits to Jalisco are bound to be happy about this fact.
Many places in the country have exactly zero birrierias, something that southern California should always be very grateful for. Walk into a restaurant that has birria on the menu in New York City and even if they promise the style of Jalisco the stew always used beef instead of goat.
Moral of the story: if you are visiting Los Angeles, include a stop at one or more birrierias to sample this birria de chivo estilo Jalisco. Some of the best are in Southeast and South Los Angeles, and this humble Compton Avenue joint would be a good place to start. The beautiful bowl above was deep and full of flavor and spice.
Even better were the tacos de birria (below), which you can ask for with handmade tortillas for a slight upcharge (as with any taco here). This is always worth it, as you already know.
When you enter, look behind you and up as the big menu board is over the door and window at the front.
