Hi Jared, were you part of the old LA Chowhound crew back in the early 2000s? Something about your writing reminds me of those early days, before the rest of the world caught on to our little secret. Your comparison of early aughts hipsters to modern day influencers is spot on. Had never thought of it in quite that way. I'm no longer in Los Angeles (nor in America) and am largely out of touch with the food scene in LA. But I do appreciate knowing what's happening back in my second home as I spent half the day here in Auckland trying tacos from little stands all over the city.

By the way, when did beef birria take over the world?! And why is it always presented as tacos? My Gold standard (ahem) was El Parian where the birria was always goat, and always served as a soup or stew with tortillas and garnishes.

Howdy! No don't tell anyone but I actually lived in New York City back then. EattheWorldNYC was my first incarnation, let's call it practice for the real thing :) Chowhound was pretty active there as well, but for some reason I never really participated much, did end up meeting most of those people here and there though.

We Chowhounds were the vanguard paving the way for the masses in years to come. I remember learning about DiFara from NY Chowhounds and being able to walk in with no wait on a lazy Weds at 2pm and chat with Dom. He offered me a porcini slice which cost $5. The next time I went a few years later, i couldn't get in the door and they ran out of dough. It's wild how things have changed for for food over 25 years. Nobody used to care, and now it's everyone's favorite hobby.
